Getting to the Root of the Problem - Root Collar Excavation (RCX)

Root Collar Excavation: Saving Trees from the Ground Up

Is your tree struggling for no apparent reason?

The problem might be buried. Many tree health issues begin at the root flare—the area where the trunk expands as it transitions into the roots. When this area is buried too deep under soil or mulch, it can lead to "hidden" killers like stem-girdling roots and trunk decay.

What is Root Collar Excavation?

Root Collar Excavation (RCX) is the process of removing excess soil and mulch from the base of a tree to expose the root flare. At Pioneer Plant Health Care, we use specialized AirSpade® technology. This tool uses high-pressure air to safely blow away compacted soil without damaging the tree's sensitive bark or root system.

Why Your Trees Need It

  • Prevent Girdling Roots: Roots that wrap around the trunk can eventually "strangle" the tree, cutting off the flow of water and nutrients.
  • Stop Trunk Decay: Bark is meant to be exposed to air. When buried, it stays moist, leading to fungal infections and rot.
  • Improve Oxygen Exchange: Soil compaction and deep planting suffocate roots. Excavation allows the tree to "breathe" again.
  • Identify Hidden Issues: It allows our arborists to inspect the health of the primary roots and apply treatments directly where they are needed.

Signs Your Tree is a Candidate

If you notice these red flags, your tree likely needs a root collar inspection:

  1. The "Telephone Pole" Look: The tree goes straight into the ground without a visible flare at the base.
  2. Early Fall Color: Leaves changing color or dropping much earlier than neighboring trees.
  3. Dieback: Tips of branches in the upper canopy starting to die off.
  4. Deep Mulch: "Mulch volcanoes" piled high against the trunk.

 Our Process

  • Assessment: We inspect the base of the tree for signs of secondary stress or girdling.
  • Pneumatic Excavation: Using the AirSpade, we clear the root collar with surgical precision.
  • Root Pruning: If girdling roots are found, we carefully prune them to redirect growth away from the trunk.
  • Soil Amendment: We often backfill with high-quality organic matter or bio-stimulants to jumpstart recovery.

Protect Your Investment

Trees are a vital part of your property’s value and beauty. Don't let a "buried" mistake shorten their lifespan.
